My Story
The Journey…
1999
How it all began
It all started whilst lying by the pool on holiday in Gran Canaria – the idea of becoming a wedding planner, and what better way to launch than organising my very own wedding fayre!
I was juggling unsociable working hours as a full time Retail HR Manager, with being a mum and I had zero business experience, I didn’t even own a computer, but none of that even entered my mind.
I hired a room (my old high school hall), hit the phones, invited suppliers to book a ‘table’, organised a ‘catwalk’ show, advertised the good old fashioned way with flyers, posters, local newspaper adverts and speaking to everyone I knew.
It was a huge success!
2000
I ‘sacked the boss’ and went all in!
Just 6 months later, I decided that I needed to do this now!
My daughter was about to start school and as a single mum I had no support around me to physically take and pick her up. I needed to create a way to have the best of both worlds – first and foremost to be the ‘present’ mum I’d always wanted to be, but also be able to financially support us and have a career at the same time!
A small shop in the village we lived in was up for rent – I contacted the landlord, used all my savings and within 4 weeks I opened my very own shop! The initial intention was that it was going to be the home of my wedding planner business – hence me naming it ‘A Rosy Marriage’ (A.R.M. – my daughter’s initials). However I quickly realised that didn’t financially make sense and I started selling greeting cards, gifts and balloons as well. It was a beautiful shop (my very own mini ‘Clintons’!)
Just 1 week after opening a ‘not so nice local lad’ broke in and set fire to my beautiful shop 😭 but thanks to insurance, resilience and tenacity, I was back open, even better than before, within 2 weeks!
2000-2002
Expansion Plans & Big Changes
My business flourished, the locals loved it and I became known as ‘The Balloon Lady’ – everyone came to me for balloons for all their events, from a single birthday balloon to full on wedding and party decorations, I even had to lease a van to transport everything to venues.
I taught myself how, and built my own website and was even able to take online orders and bookings.
I also expanded on organising wedding fayres and now hosted regular events at some of the most popular wedding venues in Staffordshire and the West Midlands.
I then made a BIG decision, I was 9 months pregnant with my 2nd child and, I decided to SELL MY SHOP!
2002-2014
Having the best of both worlds!
Although it was heartbreaking, the decision to sell my shop was the best one for me and my family at the time.
I only sold the Greeting Card & Gift part of the business – I kept the name and the event decoration and wedding fayre part of the business as I could run those from home.
And that’s exactly what I did for the next 12 years – It was perfect and it supported us financially (now a family of 6 – I’d remarried, gained a step-son and had another daughter)!
I also developed an online digital and interactive wedding directory which gave me an additional income stream from paid advertising.
I helped friends start up their own businesses and I designed and built their websites for them.
I also invested in printing machinery and started offering personalised clothing and gifts.
As the majority of my work was on the weekends, I was able to be mum in the week and business woman on the weekend – whilst still being able to take my kids along with me as well (they could often be found sitting under the table at wedding fayres and helping me blow up balloons 🥰).
2006-08 & 2009-11
Things were sweet!
During this period of time, I also opened another shop – this time a gorgeous sweet shop with a business partner!
We sold every sweet you could imagine including sweet hampers and also candy cart hire – and this time I became known as ‘the sweet lady’ 🤣
After a couple of years I decided to hand the shop over to my then business partner and continue focussing on the wedding fayres – this was the right decision for me at the time.
However a couple of years later, my old business partner approached me as she was selling the sweet shop and she gave me first refusal to buy it – I didn’t refuse, and we then ran it as a family for a further couple of years… Only selling when I became pregnant with my 3rd child.
2011 - 2018
Out with the Old – in with the New…
and putting all my eggs in one basket!
In 2011 I was approached by a neighbour who had recently started selling Aloe Vera products, to see if I wanted to buy any.
Of course, I wanted to support her in her new business and she began sharing with me the business opportunity that was attached to these products.
I initially saw a way of earning a ‘little bit extra’ and decided to join the wonderful world of Network Marketing under the umbrella of a respectable long standing company – Forever Living Products – I now became known as ‘The Aloe Lady’ 🤣.
Within 6 months I had built an incredible business, global team and income I had never earned in my life!.
Over the months and years that followed I completely wound down and closed my other businesses, ‘retired’ my once skeptical husband who then joined me in building the business together. We became one of the top 20 business owners within our company, achieved top company incentives, travelled the world to countries we had only dreamed of, spoke and trained on stage in front of thousands of people, drove top of the range luxury cars, bought out dream countryside home and experienced a level of success we never even knew was possible.
We then experienced some personal life changing events which put life into perspective and made us look at what was really important – we made the huge decision of ‘retiring’ from our network marketing business.
The years we were building this business we worked HARD, which enabled us to retire with an ongoing residual income for which we are super grateful and still receive to this day.
2018 - 2022
Going Digital & Supporting Others
I knew I had a wealth of skills to help people develop their own business.
So I started offering virtual business support which soon developed into designing websites, logos/branding, and social media support, and even print-on-demand services too.
My inbox became full of ‘Can I just pick your brain….’ and ‘can you do….’ messages.
Then ‘lockdown’ hit and pretty much everyone wanted or needed to become more visible online – I became busier than I could cope with.
The people-pleasing part of me worked overtime! I was saying yes to EVERYTHING! I became victim of my own success, was working 16-18 hour days, 7 days per week, and I suffered Chronic Burnout!
2023
Were I am now
They say things happen for a reason and I believe this happened to me to make me look at my business, the services I offered and the people I worked with.
I have streamlined what I do and have developed packages which not only make it easy for my clients to choose from but also fit in with how I want to work to work as well…
